The Story Behind the Exhibit

This month the Library of Foreign Literature is hosting a U.S. Embassy-supported exhibit of beautiful photographs taken by Emlen Knight Davies, the daughter of the then U.S. Ambassador to Russia, Joseph E. Davies. These photographs were taken in 1937 and 1938, offering a rare insider’s perspective on life in 1930s Moscow, at a time when photography was forbidden and foreign access to the Soviet Union severely limited. 

Mia Grosjean, Emlen Davies’ daughter, discovered these photographs in her mother’s albums and embarked on both an incredible artistic and spiritual journey in restoring the photographs, identifying their locations and historical importance, and using state-of-the-art technology that will allow these photographs to be viewed for decades to come.

Come join us on Friday, May 4^th, to hear Ms. Grosjean talk about the process, the specific photographs chosen for this exhibit and the incredible experiences that she and her family have experienced in Moscow during their respective times here.
