REJLANDER

Prayer
c. 1858-60

Rejlander's treatment of religious themes recalls the High Anglican or Roman Catholic wing of the Pre-Raphaelite movement represented respectively by C.A.Collins and James Collinson. Though the setting here is very different from the minutely depicted garden in Collins' 'Convent Thoughts', 1851 (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) the feeling is the same. There is no hint of the erotic tingle which Rossetti lent to mystical reverie: '...a beautiful and refined profile', wrote the 'Photographic News', 'with just that gentle curve of the short upper lip which gives the expression and appeal'.
