CAMERON

This attempt to capture the anguish of the adulterous Queen and her lover is much more successful - principally, one feels, owing to the influence of Rossetti. Inspired by Rossetti's watercolours of the 1850's, in which the trappings of his mediaevalism were never allowed to obscure intense feelings, Mrs. Cameron has selected a pose adequate to the emotions she is attempting to convey and bathed the figures in an appropriate glow. This was the photograph inthe series with which she took the most trouble - and the one, evidently, which pleased her most. |
